Oil Sands Alliance (known as Pathways Alliance until 2026) was originally formed in 2021, uniting six of Canada’s largest oil sands companies to help advance a CO2 emissions strategy and a proposed carbon capture and storage (CCS) project. The Alliance initially brought together Canadian Natural, Cenovus Energy, Imperial, MEG Energy and Suncor, with ConocoPhillips Canada joining later that year.

In 2022, Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA), which was established in 2012 to accelerate collaborative innovation in oil sands environmental technology, became part of Oil Sands Alliance (known as Pathways Alliance until 2026), strengthening our shared approach to innovation.

In 2024, Canadian Natural, on behalf of the project proponents, began filing regulatory submissions for the CO2 Transportation Network and Storage Hub. When operational, it will transport CO2 from multiple oil sands facilities to a capped sandstone formation in the Cold Lake area of Alberta for underground storage.

With Cenovus’s acquisition of MEG Energy in 2025, Oil Sands Alliance (known as Pathways Alliance until 2026) now stands at five members. Our commitment to progress continues today as we provide energy the world needs while advancing environmental innovation and projects.
