Canada’s oil sands

April 2026

There is a vital need to strengthen the security and stability of the global energy supply. With significant oil and gas resources and a focus on innovation, Canada—through Oil Sands Alliance—is well positioned to support energy security. Oil Sands Alliance is made up of five of Canada’s largest oil sands companies, working together to provide energy and advance environmental innovation.

Canada’s oil sands are an important part of the global energy supply. Canada holds the fourth-largest oil reserves in the world, with 97% located in the oil sands. Canada is also the largest supplier of crude oil to the United States (Source: Energy Fact Book, 2024–2025, Natural Resources Canada, 2025).

Members of Canada’s oil sands industry are pursuing environmental innovation through initiatives like the Pathways Project, a proposed carbon capture and storage (CCS) network and pipeline. Project proponents include Canadian Natural, Cenovus, ConocoPhillips Canada, Imperial and Suncor.
