Oil Sands Alliance applauds the federal government’s announcement designating the proposed West Coast Oil Pipeline, now known as Pacific Link, as a project of national interest.

Pacific Link represents a nation-building opportunity that can strengthen Canada’s position as an energy superpower by providing more secure, reliable energy to allies and trading partners around the world. At a time of increasing geopolitical uncertainty, infrastructure that enables Canadian resources to reach international markets is more important than ever.

Canada is the fourth-largest oil producer in the world and the oil sands remain an immense economic driver for Canada and Alberta. We support development of commercially viable export capacity and continue to seek competitive regulatory and fiscal frameworks to attract investment.

Expediting the construction of major projects strengthens Canada’s economic resilience, diversifies our trade, increases investor confidence and creates additional jobs and tax revenue for citizens and governments. As various independent analyses have shown, creating the conditions that result in the development of the Pacific Link pipeline, and the production growth required to fill it, will have a material impact on the national economy.

The trilateral memorandum of understanding signed in July by both the Alberta and federal governments, and our members, signaled a commitment to advance the oil sands industry by contemplating a series of reforms necessary to enable production growth.  All parties are continuing to work together on those reforms so Canada can be a competitive destination for energy investment.

We share the federal and provincial governments’ goals for Canada to realize its full potential as an energy superpower by growing production and accessing new markets, which creates jobs and increases prosperity for Canadians. Recent announcements by the federal and Alberta governments, including the Productivity Mega Deduction, Building Canada Strong Act, Expedited 120-Day Approvals Act, and now the Pacific Link pipeline, are all important steps to help make that vision a reality.

We thank the governments of Canada and Alberta for their continued leadership.
