Powering Canadian communities and our economy

May 2026

Canada’s oil sands industry helps strengthen communities and the economy by creating jobs, generating government revenue and supporting businesses across the country. More than 500,000 Canadians are directly or indirectly employed by Canada’s oil and gas sector, which also pays taxes and royalties that help fund roads, bridges, schools and other essential infrastructure and programs. Over the past 25 years, the oil sands have contributed $1 trillion to Canada’s economy, while the broader oil and gas industry paid $153.2 billion in federal and provincial taxes and royalties between 2018 and 2024.

Oil Sands Alliance members also support Canadian businesses through supply chain spending and regional community investment, including $101.8 billion spent with Canadian suppliers between 2019 and 2023. Support for Indigenous-affiliated businesses continues to grow as well, with an 81% increase in spending over that same period.
